MP Vincent Cable and St Margaret's charity Beating Bowel Cancer launched a local Loud Tie Campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of bowel cancer and the need for screening whenever there are suggestive symptoms.

Vincent Cable said that there had been "a big step forward in cancer screening with the extension of breast screening to older women, the introduction of more accurate cervical cancer screening methods and an undertaking to introduce bowel cancer screening".

"For obvious reasons, this is not a very easy subject for people to talk about freely. So men, in particular, don't get themselves tested until it is too late. Bowel cancer has consequently become the second killer after lung cancer".

"The stunt wearing of loud ties is one way of raising awareness. And it seems to be working".
