The Design and Artist's Copyright Society (DACS), representing local artists, thanked MP Vincent Cable today for backing a cross party Motion in the House of Commons.

The Motion supports the implementation of proposed legislation which allows artists to earn royalties form the re-sale of their work.

Joanna Cave, chief executive of DACS said: "This new legislation will introduce arguably the most important new right for artists in modern copyright history. It is important it benefits as many artists as possible. It entitles artists to a percentage share of the price every time their work is resold by a gallery, dealer or auction house. They will earn royalties from the resale of their work and share in its commercial success and increasing value'.

Vincent Cable is one of a group of 70 MPs from all political parties who have tabled an Early Day Motion which argues that the government should give the maximum possible benefit to lesser-known artists on low incomes and pointing out that the new law could give a real boost to the entire art industry in the UK. Vincent Cable has already brought in private members legislation strengthening copyright protection and is anxious to help what he calls the "very promising pool of local artists who exhibit at the Landmark Centre and elsewhere".
