MP Backs British Legion in Remembrance Events

November 15, 2005 12:18 PM

Vincent Cable MP made a strong statement of support for the British Legion's work with veterans at the Twickenham British Legion Club following the annual commemoration service.

Vincent Cable said that he had worked closely with the British Legion to take up veterans' issues and supported the Legion's emphasis this year on servicemen who are on active service in Iraq and elsewhere: "It is right that every year we should remember those who sacrificed their lives in the Great Wars of the last century. But there are still casualties on active service - almost 100 in Iraq so far - and we should pay tribute to them whatever our views on the war. There is a concern, I think, that Mr Blair and his Government are losing interest in Iraq, which provides largely bad news. But there are large numbers of servicemen still in active service, who are exposed to danger on a daily basis, and there is no strategy at present for an early, 'dignified' withdrawal."
