Dental Crisis Comes to a Head

March 27, 2006 11:54 AM

Local dentists are currently in the throes of last minute negotiations with the local Primary Care Trust leading what Vincent Cable MP calls a "a complete meltdown" in NHS dental services. Vincent Cable MP meets the Chair of the PCT later this week and says that "there are some popular practices already making it clear that they will have to withdraw from NHS services. Practices like St Mary's, Teddington, and Courtyard in Hampton want to be NHS dentists but cannot get funding because they are new practices which are penalised under the rigid and incoherent government proposals."

Vincent Cable said: "I find the behaviour of the Government beyond belief. They have negotiated contracts with dentists which are having the exact opposite effect of what they intended. They say they want to increase NHS dentistry for those who cannot afford expensive private treatment. But keen new dentists who want to build up their practices are being treated as a nuisance and they may be forced to close down. Totally mad!"
