Vincent Cable MP and West Ward Councillors are pressing the Council for urgent action to stop speeding along Staines Road and Twickenham Road near the Amida Club. This follows two recent fatalities, a pensioner on a cycle and latterly local resident Mary Bisset crossing the road from the doctor's surgery to her home on Staines Road.
Vincent Cable said: "This road is a death trap and has been a source of great anxiety for years. Following petitions by residents, whom I supported, there was agreement five years ago to install speed cameras. Then, the police changed with the change of council, and nothing was done. The danger, however, remains since there is a stretch of over half a mile of straight road which tempts drivers to go way over the speed limit. Residents are looking for three crossings at different points which speed protection provided by cameras or other decisive traffic calming measures.
"Residents are also seriously worried about proposals to increase parking capacity at the Amida Club which will add to the number of vehicles on the road."
