MP Attacks Government 'Waste' on Vehicle Checks

March 19, 2007 2:10 PM

A local resident was recently surprised to receive a letter from the DVLA warning her that she should be careful about leaving her possession in her car. Apparently a traffic warden spotted something in her care; reported it o the local crime reduction partnership; the contacted DVLC and she got a warning letter.

Vincent Cable wrote to Home Office ministers to ask why scarce resources were devoted to this activity when there were already so many pressures on the police and government departments: "the minister tells me that over 50,000 letters have been sent out this financial year as part of this initiative (costing £10,000 in mail alone). Some residents may welcome the fact that parking wardens are keeping an eye on their cars and are reporting careless behaviour to the government but surely it would be more sensible just to put a simple note on the windscreen. I would be interested to know if other residents have had this experience".
