Transport 2000 with MP Vincent Cable and film actress Jenny Agutter (of The Railway Children) staged a protest at Westminster last week at the chronic overcrowding on commuter trains (with a Sardine Man dressed up to make the point).
Vincent Cable said that: "as a daily commuter myself, I am all too aware of the discomfort experience by thousands of my constituents every day because of lack of capacity on SW Trains.
"The fault lies squarely with the Government because the terms of the latest franchise require a government surplus to be squeezed out of the franchise in addition to high profits for Stagecoach. The commuter comes last. Although some new capacity is promised, it simply isn't enough to cope with growing numbers. I am not talking about fancy technological solutions but longer and more frequent trains when they are needed, including use, as soon as possible, of the Waterloo International terminal for domestic commuter services."
