MP Appeals for Alternative to 'Rape' Subway

July 2, 2007 5:36 PM

MP Vincent Cable has written a strongly worded letter to Transport for London to challenge their decision to reject a crossing on the A316 as an alternative to the subway from Jubilee Avenue and Meadway.

On 18th June a female was subject to a serious sexual assault at knifepoint in the subway. The crime has been investigated and a male has been arrested.

But the crime occurred in the context of a long campaign led by Vincent Cable, and supported by councillors and residents' associations, for a proper, over ground, crossing with lights on the A316. Recently, Transport for London declined to provide such a crossing.

Vincent Cable said: "there has been frustration for years on the Dene estate in particular that there is no safe crossing to Whitton except for the underpass which elderly and female residents fear using; particularly after dark. This incident confirms the validity of local fears for public safety. I have returned to the charge and demanded that Mayor Livingstone pay more attention to public safety at the expense of traffic speeds on the A316".
