A national campaign has been launched to address the problem of fit young people at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
Vincent Cable MP co-hosted a reception in Parliament for the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) at which top UK sportsmen were present.
Vincent Cable said that he had taken on the campaign because the issue affected substantial numbers of young people in the constituency and the borough: "We are a rugby mecca, for Union and League; there is one of the leading universities in sports science (St Mary's); local schools have produced many of the country's top rowers; and the borough has the highest participation rate in sport of any in the country. Yet few people are aware that a small number of very fit young people face the potentially fatal risk of cardiac arrest which can be prevented with a modest, cheap screening programme."
