Local Citizens Advice Bureaux Reports Signs of Credit Crunch

January 13, 2009 4:46 PM

The Local Citizens Advice Bureau's January report notes the growing signs of the credit crunch:

"the increasing number of clients who have been made redundant or threatened with redundancy… "the mortgage scene is increasingly gloomy"… "the number of clients forced to seek crisis loans."

Vince Cable MP who is the CAB's Parliamentarian of the year is working with the CAB to remedy problems in the benefit system which are hitting victims of the credit crunch: "there are serious problems with crisis loans. Residents who go to the Job Centre can no longer get a personal interview but one directed to a helpline which is always engaged. I have raised this issue with Ministers but constituents and the local CAB tell me it is still a big problem. There are also big administrative problems dealing with benefits and tax credits. The government stupidly laid off a lot of social security staff just when they were most needed."
