Victory in Late Night Pubs Battle

January 29, 2009 4:39 PM

After intervention by the police and protests by local residents and their representatives, an application by the Grand Union Pub in Twickenham to host 6 "DJ Nights" lasting to 4.30am has been withdrawn.

Vincent Cable MP and local councillors have praised the police for "standing up for the local community".

Vincent Cable said: "The 2003 Licensing Act which opened the way to these lave night drinking orgies, and which I opposed, has opened the door to large scale anti-social behaviour. It is only if the police are willing to wade in on the residents' side that it is possible to stop some outrageous proposals, like this one. This pub and the William Webb Ellis (formerly the post office) have been the centre of much of the anti-social drinking in the Borough for a long time."
