Another Whitton Closure

March 16, 2009 3:15 PM

Whitton High Street will lose its Nationwide Building Society branch in a few weeks time (29 May). Whitton has already lost several shops and other High Street activities in the current slump.

Its customers will be relocated to the Twickenham branch.

Vincent Cable MP said: "This closure is not good news and is occurring at a bad time. It is unfortunate that the Nationwide, which is a mutual building society and not one of the failed banks, is pulling the plug. I don't think that any jobs are being lost - staff is being transferred elsewhere - but this closure is not helpful to maintaining footfall and confidence in Whitton's shopping centre."

The Nationwide blames low sales and the proximity of branches in Twickenham and Hounslow.
