Swing to the Liberal Democrats in European Elections

June 9, 2009 1:49 PM

The Borough's Liberal Democrats are celebrating their best ever European Election results.

The poll results, announced on Sunday night, saw a 2.5% swing away from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats.

Responding to the election results, Twickenham MP Vince Cable MP said:

"I would like to thank local people for their continued support. It is gratifying to see that in a tough election, where the expenses scandal has understandably dominated, the Liberal Democrats strengthen their position locally. The swing away from the Conservatives is a good omen for any General Election, and to see Labour finish fifth just shows how much this Government has lost the trust of local people."

Richmond Park MP Susan Kramer added:

"European Elections are always a tough set of elections for us, so to achieve a swing away from the Conservatives is a great result. We will continue to campaign on the issues that matter to local people; jobs, the economy and opposing Heathrow expansion."
