Government's woeful record on capital projects

November 20, 2009 12:01 AM

Following the publication today of the TaxPayers' Alliance report 'Out of Control: How the Government overspends on capital projects', Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable said:

"The Government's track record on managing budgets for capital projects is utterly woeful.

"At a time when public sector debt is sky rocketing, we can ill afford these vast cost overruns in capital projects.

"Tackling the deficit by repeating the 1980s and slashing capital spending would be a disaster, but a more levelheaded approach to capital projects is essential.

"Public servants must be given the skills to properly manage the costs of capital projects, while the Government must become much more realistic about the costs of the projects it proposes."
