Businesses seeking to bring down the cost of their electricity bills are encouraged to contribute to a new Government consultation launched last week over its proposed £250 million Energy Intensive Industries Package (EIIP).

Lasting for 11 weeks, the consultation will be used to gather views on proposals for the multi-million pound package, which aims to reduce the impact of energy and climate change policies on the cost of electricity for energy intensive industries. Industry and other interested parties are encouraged to comment on the proposals.

    Business Secretary Vince Cable said:

"Rising electricity prices are a real concern for many businesses that see the issue as a barrier to growth. This is why we set aside up to £250 million in the Autumn Statement to offset some of the costs of energy and climate change policies for the most energy intensive industries.

"Many energy intensive businesses are located in areas that have been hit hard by the economic downturn, which is why it's important that we get this right and present the best support package available.

"Following detailed consideration of the responses to this consultation, I will announce the proposed scheme for compensation in spring 2013, subject to state aid considerations from the European Commission."

Government estimates predict that energy and climate change policies could add up to 28 per cent on average electricity prices paid by large energy intensive users in 2020.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey said:

"It is important we ensure that as we move to a low-carbon economy, those industries that are more energy-intensive are not forced to relocate to other countries. This would not only have a negative impact on our economy, but could also result in us exporting emissions to countries that are not as strongly committed to cutting carbon emissions.

"Compensating the most electro-intensive industries will benefit our economy by retaining vital jobs and preserving our manufacturing base, whilst enabling our industries to grow and transition to a green economy."

Business Secretary Vince Cable has launched the Unistats website, which provides comparison information on over 31,000 universtiy and college courses in the UK.

Students will now be able to compare key data on what matters to them when choosing a course at university, including:

    • Student satisfaction ratings.
    • Graduate salaries and employment.
    • Tuition fees and financial support.
    • The cost of accommodation.

The site uses the new Key Information Set (KIS). This was compiled after consulting students about what information they found most useful when choosing courses. Each course's data links directly to the relevant university web page which gives more detail on course content and how it will be taught.

For the first time, prospective students will also be able to tailor their search by their personal preferences, specifying what is most important for them. They will also be able to create a shortlist of their favourite courses and produce a detailed comparison page, making it easier to compare different options.

Results from the 2012 National Students' Survey, published today, will also be included in the site.

    Dr Cable said:

"Applying to university is a big decision and we want to ensure that all students, whatever their background, have the key facts at their fingertips to help them make the right choice for them.

"The introduction of the Key Information Set represents a major step forward for students, their parents, and their school and college advisers."

    Article: Sep 24, 2012

If you attend conference regularly you may remember five years ago. We were interrupted by news of the collapse of a small bank in Newcastle. That was the beginning of a terrible economic storm which rages to this day. It has left behind broken banks, lower living standards, ballooning budget deficits, job insecurity and a sense of permanent crisis.

  • Vince Cable, Business Secretary at Imperial College London
    Article: Sep 12, 2012

Vince Cable yesterday set out his vision for the future of British Industry, looking at where the UK has a competitive advantage now, and where it can build on that in the next twenty years.

He outlined his plans in a speech to business leaders and committed to a long term, strategic partnership between Government and industry, that will give businesses clarity about where the Government will be concentrating its efforts.

Speaking at Imperial College, London, Business Secretary Vince Cable said:

"Government makes decisions every day that affect the British economy, but has for too long done this in an ad hoc way. Government needs to be more like business, by making strategic plans and sticking to them.

"Our first part of that plan is lifting the barrier that poor access to finance puts on growth. By helping firms to invest capital, businesses expand, and create jobs.

"But I am also setting out a clear and ambitious vision, a commitment far beyond the usual political timescale that will continue to bear fruit decades later. It will give our businesses certainty, allow them to make their own plans, and know that the full weight of Government is behind them. We will work in a strategic partnership with industry, focusing our support on specific sectors. This is our commitment to growth in action."

The speech sets out a number of other actions including:
