Vince Cable MP joined the national charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) at a high profile parliamentary reception last night as it raised the debate about the importance of screening young athletes at 'grass roots' level.

A number of young Olympic hopefuls also attended in order to highlight the importance of offering promising young athletes specialist cardiac screening at the outset of their training careers.

The Right Honourable Dr Vince Cable MP for Twickenham was guest of honour at the official opening of the long awaited new cadet centre in London Road Twickenham.

Cadets, staff, friends and supporters toured the new building which will serve the needs both of 196 Twickenham Army Cadet Force (Royal Engineers) Detachment and of 267 (Twickenham) Squadron Air Training Corps.

Vince visited Heathfield Nursery & Infant School and presented the children with gifts, as part of the Tesco's 'Computer for Schools' voucher scheme.

A spokeswoman from the school said,

'The children were pleased to receive their gift at the presentation. With the Tesco vouchers, we were able to obtain flip camcorders, card readers and electronic microscopes which are fantastic resources for the children.'

As the Liberal Democrats' party conference draws to a close, David Dimbleby chairs Question Time from Birmingham, with guests including Vince Cable, Harriet Harman and Priti Patel.

On Sunday local MP Vince Cable attended the church service to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11, which was held at St Mary's Church in Twickenham. The service brought together many different religious groups in an attempt to unite all faiths and creeds.

Vince said, 'This is a great initiative from St Mary's and a great opportunity to express our solidarity with the loved ones of the many whom were killed that day'.

A brand new purpose built care home for people with autism and learning disabilities has just opened in Lichfield Lane, Whitton. The home, which provides care and accommodation for seven young adults aged 18-25, is the second such home to be opened in the borough in the last two years by the Hampton Hill based London Care Partnership.

Twickenham MP, Vince Cable has moved to reassure local residents that the King Street Post Office is still very much open for business after Costcutter, who shared the premises, moved out.

Vince Cable said:

"The King Street Post Office is greatly valued by local residents and there has been some concern locally about its future after the departure of Costcutter. I have spoken with Post Office Minister, Ed Davey and have been assured that the Post Office will remain open for business.

The Environment Agency has contacted local MP Vince Cable to reassure him that work is well underway to clean up the Thames after heavy rainfall led to 450,000 tonnes of sewage being discharged into the river.

Thames Water are conducting the clean up with Environment Agency officers supervising the operation. Oxygenation vessels have been in operation to pump 30 tonnes of oxygen into the water in an attempt to minimise fish deaths.

Twickenham MP Vince Cable is "very concerned" to hear about planned redundancies at the Richmond and Twickenham Times, one of Newsquest South London's titles.

Vince Cable commented:

"It's a very important part of the local community and the Richmond and Twickenham Times has long been a highly regarded local paper with a good record. It is something that binds the community together.

MP Vince Cable has called on NHS Richmond to take action following review into community based stroke care by the Care Quality Commission, in which NHS Richmond scored the lowest possible scores in two categories and scored poorly in a number of other categories.

The report highlighted weakness in the levels of early supported discharge, which allows stroke survivors to leave hospital at the earliest possible opportunity and receive care at home, and the participation that survivors and carers have in planning their own care services. In these categories the PCT scored the lowest marks. NHS Richmond also scored badly on managing the transfer from home to hospital and providing information to people who have had a stroke.
