Lib Dems Big Victory in Borough

4.43.51pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 8th May 2006

MP Vincent Cable expressed his delight at the sweeping victory won by his party in the borough elections with 17 gains, 12 on the Twickenham side: "This was a decisive victory achieved with a gratifyingly high voter turnout for a local election. Our team ran a very effective operation and out campaigned the Conservatives. The new Lib Dem team has a good mixture of experienced councillors and young, enthusiastic, newcomers".

"We have a sophisticated, well informed, public in this borough who expect the council to consult properly before they make decisions; who want a stronger commitment to the environment than they got under the Conservatives; and who will expect the council to take a stand, whenever possible, against over development by developers. I am optimistic that the new council will be an improvement and I look forward to working with them".
