MP Reports Misleading Baby Food

3.04.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Aug 2007

Local stores are selling baby food which pretends it is the equivalent of breast milk, illegally. Vincent Cable, MP, has asked the local trading standards officers what action they plan to take.

Vincent Cable said: "there have been long battles to stop the baby food companies using misleading advertising to promote their products. It is now clearly illegal, as well as incorrect, for manufacturers to claim to have products which are 'close to breast milk' or for retailers to market them".

"The Twickenham branch of the National Childbirth Trust has asked me to raise this issue which I am happy to do, having earlier joined the campaign led by Jemima Khan promoting the health benefits of breast feeding as against inferior manufactured substitutes".
