Residents Press for Crossing

At a public meeting of 60 residents on the Rivermeads Estate there were demands for a pedestrian crossing on the Staines Road to protect those trying to cross one of the fastest and most dangerous roads in the Borough.

The meeting was chaired by Vincent Cable MP with West Ward councillors Munira Hassam and Piers Allen in attendance and they support the residents' demands. Council officials described their own proposals, including road narrowing, which were broadly welcomed but regarded as inadequate.

Vincent Cable said: "This is a very dangerous road with a long history of fatalities and injuries. Council officials confirm that the speed of moving traffic on this 30mph road is typically close to 45mph. Most local residents don't attempt to cross the road, otherwise accidents would be higher.

"I have been pressing for safety measures for some years but speed cameras were rejected and warning signs have proved ineffective. Everyone is agreed that further measures including a safe crossing are essential."
